“The Road Goes on Forever and the Party Never Ends” REK
This Robert Earl Keen song title kind of sums it up. What a fantastic trip! Ferrell and I took a favorable route through the Smokies and landed at the Georgia Theater in Athens. Such a cool little college town. I really enjoyed meeting the people and sharing music.
From there we went to Newberry South Carolina where I opened at the Opera House which was filled to capacity. The crowd was an unbelievably attentive and gracious group of folks. This historic building was an absolute gem of a venue. Mark Twain lectured from this same stage! Yep, true story.
Then we cruised 85 on 85 towards Montgomery, AL. It was Roberts’ first time at this 1800 seat theater and he filled it up. When I walked onto the stage at sound check, I didn’t realize I had kicked off my flip- flops and was running/dancing/jumping around until it was already happening. Robert’s band was sound checking and there’s a chance they may have thought I was high. My tie dyed pants probably didn’t help. The theater is a huge space and has the most amazing sound system I’ve ever plugged into. You could hear every breath. The staff at the theater discovered it was my birthday weekend. They surprised me with a birthday cake in the green room. They too are musicians, and one pulled out an old 12 string Gibson guitar with the fattest widest neck I’ve ever seen. They sang happy birthday in perfect 4 part harmony. They said it must be hard to be on the road and away from my family for my birthday and they wanted me to feel like I had family right then and there. Well a giant shiny golden star goes out to the Montgomery Performing Arts Centre staff and to the amazing warm wonderful audience. Montgomery and Newberry took southern hospitality to a new level. I left the south feeling like a princess. (:
